Whether you are shopping for natural or organic foods for your overall health or to lose weight, you should be aware that food labels can be quite deceptive. For one thing, not everything that is “natural” or even organic is good for you! Many poisonous plants in the wild fit this description -100% natural and organic, but they can still kill you. This is an extreme example, but I just mention it to prove that natural does not equal healthy.
For example, many foods that contain lots of sugar are all natural. Even health food store products that use organic sugar can be still too high in sugar to be healthy, especially if you eat a lot of it. This includes many organic breakfast cereals and “alternative” cookies and candies. They are still better than the plain old refined sugar products, but your body is better off without all that sugar, no matter how natural. This is especially true if you’re trying to lose weight!
Sodium is another area where labels can get you. Many all natural and organic products are very high in sodium. This includes organic chips (corn chips, tortilla chips, potato chips, etc.), all natural and organic frozen foods, soups, and so forth.
Depending on your health, some salt is fine, especially if it’s sea salt as opposed to plain table salt. But, again, most commercial –and this includes natural and organic– prepared foods simply have a lot more sodium than you need.
Actually, this is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to how deceptive labels can be. This video goes into the subject in a little more detail:
