Whey protein is a pure and easily absorbed form of protein that can help with weight loss, provided you eat a sensible and healthy diet and exercise regularly. Without these factors, no single “miracle food” or supplement is going to help you lose weight. But whey protein is probably preferable to soy, especially for anyone who doesn’t eat animal products. If you do eat animal products, stick to natural or organic meats (preferably grass fed if you eat beef) and dairy products.

Food Journal -A Valuable Weight Loss Tool

There’s evidence that keeping a food journal can make it easier to lose weight and stick to your diet and exercise program. A food journal is simply a record of what you eat every day. Most people think that they already know what they eat, but this often isn’t the case! It’s very common to snack, take extra helpings of a dish or maybe add something else that you didn’t plan on.

You don’t have to keep a food journal for the rest of your life. As an experiment, try it for a week. The key to success with this tactic, however, is being diligent and accurate. You want to write down everything you eat or drink, in detail. This means every cup of coffee (and what you put in it!), every pat of butter you put on a piece of bread, whether you took seconds at the salad bar, ate a few cookies in between meals, etc.

Awareness is the first step when it comes to changing your eating habits and lifestyle. The way most of us live, it’s just too easy to lose track of every morsel of food we eat during the day. But your body absorbs the calories, whether you remember it or not.

Aside from making you aware of what you’re eating, a food journal can alert you to when you eat. That’s why you want to keep track of the times as well as the foods themselves. For example, you may notice that you get hungry an hour before lunch and tend to snack on potato chips or candy. This could motivate you to bring some healthy snacks to work so you’re not tempted by junk foods in between meals.

A food journal is a simple tool that can increase your awareness of how, what and when you’re eating. Don’t underestimate the value of this knowledge, as it can lead you to take positive steps towards your goal to lose weight.

Eating at Night and Weight Loss

If you want to lose weight, when you eat can be almost as important as what and how much you eat. A recent study suggests, for example, that eating less after 8 p.m. may be helpful for weight loss.

This issue combines two factors -what time you go to bed and how late in the night you eat. Research has shown that there’s a connection between sleep and weight loss. People who don’t get enough sleep also have trouble losing weight. But studies such as the one mentioned above suggest that part of the problem with lack of sleep may be the time people are eating.

Later in the evening, you tend to be less active and your body has less ability to metabolize the calories you take in. So it makes sense that you should eat less, if anything at all, at night.

The other side of the coin is that you should eat your larger meals earlier in the day. Eating a large breakfast, for example, is much healthier than a large dinner or, even worse, a high calorie late night snack.

If you get the munchies late at night, try to focus on low calorie, healthy snacks. It really doesn’t take that many calories to stop those hunger pangs. The main thing to remember is to eat the bulk of your calories between the time you get up and the early evening.

Is there a connection between stress and weight loss? According to a study by the National Institutes of Health, it’s easier to lose weight if you have less stress in your life. This isn’t the first time we’ve heard this, but it helps drive home the point. Of course, no one likes stress, so this just gives you an additional reason to control it. On a related note, the study also indicated that people who sleep at least 6 hours per night can more easily lose weight.

Why does stress possibly lead to weight gain, or at least having a hard time losing weight? While the study doesn’t seem to answer this question, we can speculate. For one thing, many people who have a weight problem are inclined to eat when they feel stressed out. There might be more to it than that, though. Stress may cause an imbalance in your metabolism so that you don’t burn fat as easily.

If you have stress and are also struggling with weight issues, why not kill two birds with one stone and exercise more? Exercise has been shown to reduce stress, and it’s obviously a good way to shed pounds as well. The thing is, to achieve either or both of these goals, you have to do it regularly. It’s good to get both aerobic or cardio type exercise as well as resistance training, such as weight lifting.

Aside from exercise, you may want to try de-stressing activities like meditation, yoga or even self-hypnosis. If you find the right formula, and make sure you get enough rest, you can feel more relaxed and also lose weight.

According to the Los Angeles Times, a recent study suggests that parents play a large role in helping kids lose weight. Like many studies, this may cause you to shake your head or say, “Duh!” How could this not be true, after all? Parents obviously are a major influence on kids. However, as obvious as this is, it’s still worth thinking about and if this study makes parents pay more attention to how their kids are eating and exercising, then it’s served a useful purpose.

It may be that parents who neglect to encourage their children to eat well and get enough exercise are adults who aren’t following these habits themselves. Now this isn’t from a study, it’s just me speculating, but it makes sense that children often copy what they see in their families. For this reason, the most important way you can be a positive influence on your kids is to set a good example! The adage, “do what I say, not what I do,” doesn’t work very well.

With so much information available on nutrition and the benefits of exercise, we should be seeing a decrease in problems like obesity, but this unfortunately isn’t the case. It’s especially tragic that so many people are becoming overweight at younger and younger ages. We have to remember that people of all ages, but especially children, are meant to be active. Watching TV, playing on the computer and being driven everywhere is not a natural lifestyle, and such habits are taking their toll on the younger generation. The book, Last Child in the Woods, by Richard Louv makes a good case for ensuring that kids spend adequate time outdoors.

Parents must be vigilant and not let their children fall victim to these modern trends of inactivity and a junk food diet. And as a secondary benefit, you may be motivated to lose a few pounds yourself at the same time!

Is a High Protein Diet Healthy?

Many people trying to lose weight are encouraged to eat a high protein, low carb diet, but is this really effective? More importantly, is it healthy? A recent study suggests that this type of diet may increase the risks of colon cancer. This is consistent with the belief that it’s healthier to eat a vegetarian diet and one that’s high in fiber.

Of course, it can be confusing to read about all these different diets and the seemingly contradictory information. There are a few principles that it’s good to keep in mind, though.

For one thing, it seems likely that the same way of eating isn’t best for everyone. Whether you believe in the idea put forth in books like Eat Right For Your Type, which says that different blood types should eat different diets, or simply that each individual has his or her own individual metabolism and needs, you should always keep this in mind. Consider also that ancient diets like Ayurveda separate people into various types with different requirements.

The aforementioned study did not discuss what kind of protein was consumed either. Putting everything we know together, it seems likely that it’s best to limit your intake of animal protein (if you don’t want to go completely vegetarian), and to stick as much as possible to organic meat and dairy. Also, and this may drive some people crazy as it seems to go against what they’ve been taught, soy is not the health food many people thought, especially if it’s not fermented. Fermented soy products like tempeh and miso are quite healthy, but eating large amounts of tofu or soy milk isn’t a good idea.

So when it comes to being both healthy and losing weight, you should stick to natural foods as much as possible, and take a moderate approach, as well as one that’s consistent with your own body. This doesn’t necessarily mean your blood type or even Ayurvedic type, though you can consider such factors. What’s best is finding out how you feel after eating certain foods and also noticing which diets work best for you in terms of losing or maintaining your body weight.

Weight Loss Scams -How Do You Recognize Them?

I just read a news article on weight loss scams, and this made me think about what, exactly, fits into this category and how to avoid them. In any type of advertising, you’ll find hype, and weight loss is certainly no exception. Yet how do you separate ordinary hype from outright lies?

In general, if someone tells you that a certain product, usually a pill -but it could also be something you wear, such as a magnet- will allow you to quickly and safely lose weight in a very short time, you should be skeptical. For one thing, rapid weight loss is hardly ever safe. That’s the paradox -the diet pills that really work are probably not safe, especially in the long run, and the ones that are safe don’t work, because they’re little more than placebos!

You should also take “before and after” photos with a grain of salt. This isn’t to say that all of them are fake, only that it’s impossible to tell from an ad. You have to consider what type of system is being offered, how long the company or product has been around, and if there are genuine, verifiable testimonials. Anyone can make claims or put up photos.

The other side of this issue is that many weight loss products or systems do work if you use them consistently and don’t do things that work against them. For example, if you order an exercise video, you obviously have to use it regularly. But you also have to watch your diet, because no type of exercise will work if you’re eating poorly. There are, of course, people with very fast metabolisms, or professional athletes who burn up so many calories that they can maintain or even reduce weight while eating a lot, but if you were in this category you wouldn’t be ordering diet/exercise programs! So you have to have some patience and diligence and not work at cross purposes.

All in all, when it comes to weight loss scams, use your common sense and do some research before ordering anything. And remember that losing weight is an achievable goal, but not one you can accomplish overnight or without any effort.

HCG Diet and Why You Should Avoid It

What is the HCG Diet and Does it Work?

The HCG Diet, sometimes written hCG, stands for human chorionic gonadotrophin -the one and only time in this article I’ll be spelling that out!- has gotten a lot of attention lately. People who want to lose weight are always looking for the latest miracle diet, and many hope that this might be it. Let’s take a look at what the HCG Diet is and if it has any possibilities.

First of all, hCG is a pregnancy hormone and has not been approved by the FDA for weight loss. This isn’t to imply that the FDA is the final word on everything, but it’s still worth noting, because it means that you may be breaking the law by buying hCG products sold as a weight loss supplement.

What’s really interesting about this diet is that no one actually claims that hCG makes you lose weight. No, you lose weight by going on a near starvation diet of a mere 500 calories per day! The role of hCG is, supposedly, to suppress your appetite so you can stick with this diet more easily.

Now, from the above, we (the team at lose weight Programs), who favor natural and safe weight loss methods, could say right off the bat that this is not a diet we’d recommend. That’s whether this drug “works” as advertised or not. Because any diet that has you restricting calories to such an extreme is clearly not safe. Yet, on top of this, research seems to indicate that it doesn’t work anyway.

Anyone who manages to survive on a 500 calorie per day diet will, no doubt, lose some weight. But this is a diet that’s almost impossible to stick to, at least without suffering serious side effects, such as possible anemia, malnutrition or simply weakness (for one thing, you’re likely to be losing muscle along with, or instead of fat). Then you’re likely to bounce back and binge to make up for the calorie deficit.

In short, the HCG Diet is simply the latest starvation, or extremely low calorie diet to gain notoriety, with the added negative factor that you’re taking a drug that might have additional, yet to be identified side effects. We hate to say something like this on a weight loss site, but you may be better off being a little overweight than playing around with a diet like this!

Sleep and Weight Loss -The Hidden Connection

What’s the connection between sleep and weight loss? Apparently, if you don’t get enough sleep, as if that’s not enough of a problem, you’re also at risk for being overweight. On the surface, this almost seems counter-intuitive. After all, if you’re awake, you have the chance to be running around and burning up calories, while sleeping -you might think- would make it harder to lose weight. As it turns out, though, it doesn’t work this way.

This is not news, but more and more research confirms this. There doesn’t seem to be a clear cut explanation, at least that we’ve seen, but it probably has something to do with your metabolism. Lack of sleep can cause many negative effects, apart from just being tired all the time. It can make it harder to think clearly and perform your job well. It can lead to depression and other emotional problems. And it also interferes with the way your body burns fat.

Since we already know that getting enough sleep is important, even apart from weight loss, this is just another reason to address this issue if it’s a problem for you. In some cases, you may need medical help if you have a severe case of insomnia. For many people, however, lack of sleep has to do with factors that are under your control.

If you consume stimulants, including coffee or caffeinated tea or alcohol at night, this can interfere with your sleep. So can large meals, which, incidentally, are harder to burn off late in the day. Finally, if you stay up too late because you’re watching TV, surfing the internet or playing games on your computer (or some other reason), this is really a matter of self-discipline. What’s more important, your health or spending a few mindless hours staring at a screen? Hopefully, you’ll answer this question the sensible way!

So we may not yet understand exactly what the connection between sleep and weight loss is, but we know there is one. And, since getting enough sleep makes us feel better anyway, we now have even more reason to make sure we don’t ignore this important aspect of our lives.

Is Bitter Orange a Safe Weight Loss Supplement?

Some weight loss supplements contain a substance called bitter orange, whose effectiveness is disputed by researchers. As the name implies, this is a type of orange tree native to the Mediterranean, that’s too bitter to make for good eating. However, this tree, whose technical name is Citrus Aurantium, is a stimulant that may help with weight loss.

However, the problem with this supplement is that it’s related to ephedra, a stimulant that has been connected with various health problems, such as high blood pressure and heart palpitations. Some deaths have even been associated with ephedra. It’s been banned by the FDA for this reason.

Bitter orange contains a stimulant called synephrine, which is related to ephedrine. However, so far, bitter orange is still legal, which is why it’s found in so many supplements.

Should You Trust Bitter Orange As a Weight Loss Supplement?

In general, it seems that the evidence that bitter orange is effective for weight loss is disputed, while there are potential dangers. It would seem sensible for anyone who is prone to high blood pressure or heart problems to avoid it. And since people who are overweight are more likely than average to be at risk for such conditions, this does not seem to be the ideal supplement for anyone to be experimenting with.

Losing Weight -How to Keep Your Motivation Up

Many people get excited and enthusiastic about the idea of losing weight. The problem is, that initial excitement doesn’t usually last very long. You find it less and less easy to focus on your goals and stick with your diet or exercise routine. Exercising becomes a tedious chore. You feel like abandoning your lean cuisines in favor of a Big Mac followed by a large helping of ice cream. The possibility of losing weight gradually seems ever less likely. When you start feeling like this, you need some effective motivational tactics.

To begin with, set a definite goal. Saying “I want to lose weight” isn’t enough. How much weight do you want to lose, and when? So you may decide that you’re going to lose fifty pounds over the next year, which gives you a real goal. Writing down your goals can make it easier for you to take them seriously. Make sure that everyone in your life -friends, co-workers, family members- know about your goal. Putting up a website where you post your progress is another idea. This increases accountability and gives you further incentive to stick with your goal.

You should also create your own weight loss diary where you track your daily progress. When your weight changes, either up or down, or even if it doesn’t change, note this in your diary. Keep track of your exercise sessions. Write down what you did and for how long. What did you eat? You should keep track of all this. These little things have a big impact in the long run, yet they’re so easy to forget about once you actually do them. Going back and reading previous diary entries will give you an accurate picture of how far you’ve come and what’s holding you back.

Take before and after pictures. While watching the number on the scale go down is exciting, it’s even more rewarding to see visible results as your figure shrinks. Start off with a photo of yourself right now. If you take a new picture every week, you’ll be able to notice the changes.

Find ways to make the process fun. It can get tedious to jog or go to the fitness club all the time, so find something you really enjoy instead. Maybe you’d enjoy Zumba or swimming. You don’t have to stick to the same routine forever; making changes can keep it interesting.

Rewarding yourself is another essential thing to do. It’s important to recognize even small successes when it comes to weight loss. We tend to think that accomplishing our goals should be its own reward, but sometimes we need to give ourselves a pat on the back. Your reward can be anything but a high calorie food, as that would work against your goals! You should give yourself rewards for exercising regularly, as well as sticking with your diet. This helps you to realize that even achieving smaller goals is important, and it helps keep you motivated to go further.

Losing weight takes time and effort, there’s no denying it. But if you set small goals for yourself, keep track of your progress, and celebrate your victories with little rewards, you’ll have an easier time sticking with your goal. Some people also find it helpful to do some special techniques, such as hypnosis for weight loss to keep their motivation high.

Losing Weight by Drinking More Water

Can you really lose weight by drinking more water? We all know we’re supposed to drink plenty of water every day. It’s good for your skin, and it keeps your internal organs working smoothly. But did you also know that drinking more water can help you lose weight? It’s easier than lifting weights and a whole lot cheaper than buying a treadmill.

Many people don’t realize that they’re not getting as much water as they need, and that they’re usually dehydrated. When the body isn’t getting enough fluids, it does its best to retain water. The water it stores has to go somewhere, so it tends to get packed away where it creates unflattering bulges on your body–kind of like a camel! When you consistently drink more water, your body gets the idea that it doesn’t need to store water. By the way, if you’re worried about running to the bathroom more often, you’ll be pleased to know that this side effect wears off once your body gets accustomed to having all the water it needs.

Drinking water helps burn more calories, too. Here’s why: The liver is responsible for metabolizing fat in your body, converting it to energy. However, the liver also has the job of assisting overworked kidneys with their job of removing waste from your body. When you don’t drink enough water, the kidneys don’t function as well, which means your liver has to pick up some of the workload. When that happens, your liver can’t devote as much energy to metabolizing fat. Drinking plenty of water means your kidneys and liver have an easier time doing their respective jobs, which leads to greater weight loss.

Finally, drinking water will encourage you to eat less. Most people are so used to being dehydrated that they mistake signs of thirst with hunger pangs. Instead of getting something to drink, they grab a muffin or a candy bar instead. Drinking water will cut down on snacking. Plus, drinking water before each meal will make you feel more full, which means you won’t eat quite as much.

There are oodles of other health benefits associated with drinking water, too. It can help clear up your skin, tighten your pores, and give you a healthy glow. You’ll also have more energy, and your joints will be well lubricated.

Get in the habit of drinking more water, preferably eight to ten 8oz glasses a day. You don’t have to cut soda or coffee from your diet altogether; instead, you should commit to drinking two additional glasses of water for every cup of coffee you drink. If the taste of water doesn’t appeal to you, add a zest of lemon, or try flavored water instead. It’s a good policy to carry a bottle of water with you wherever you go.

It’s beach season again and you have to lose weight in a week, or you have a party to go to or a wedding.  There are probably dozens of different reasons that you could think of that makes you want to lose weight fast.  The decision that you’re making today is great.

One thing that you’ll need to realize is that a crash diet will help you to lose weight quickly, but it isn’t a long term solution to dieting.  The way to look at this endeavor is as either a kick start to a more long term and traditional program, or if you’re already super lean, you can use this week’s effort as a step to get super lean.

The first step that you need to take towards your new goal is to begin to consume large amounts of water.  The average person is supposed to take in 8 glasses of water a day.

To accomplish what you want to in a week, you have to give your body more than average hydration.  I mean drinking lots of water, upwards of a gallon a day.  The reason for this may sound strange, but the more water that you drink the less it holds in your body.  This will reduce your water weight drastically.  This technique alone can result in a 5-7 pound lose of water weight throughout the course of a week. And water acts as an appetite suppressant to help you lose weight while not adding any calories.

The next thing that has to be tweaked is your diet, not just the food that you eat, but also the way you eat.  You’re not going to make a dent in the way your body looks if you continue making bad food choices.  Most of us are carbohydrate addicted.  Let’s face it, we love our breads and pastas – but not this week.

If you want to make a difference in yourself in a one week period then you have to eliminate all the starchy and sugary carbohydrates from your diet.  These include bread, pasta, cakes, pies, candy, and any other sugary doughy thing you could think of.  What your diet is going to consist of during this week is protein, protein, and more protein.  You need to be eating nothing but lean meats, such as chicken breast, turkey breast, lean beef and egg whites.  This may sound extreme, but if you want to see a change in your body in such a short period of time, drastic steps have to be taken.

Although I wouldn’t recommend such an extreme diet in a more traditional program, when you want to make a quick change, or a quick start, this is the way to get results fast.  After the week is over and you have gotten through whatever special occasion it is that you needed to go to, you can start adding in some additional carbohydrates to your meals. Remember, to add them in slowly or you’ll gain the weight that you lost right back.

Another piece of advice is to keep your meals small.  Eat 5-6 small meals a day consisting of lean meats, vegetables and fruits, and you’ll be on your way to a body that others will envy.  So lose weight in a week and get yourself on the road to being slim and fit.

Therefore, those willing to prescribe hCG are in weight loss clinics cashing in on the hype started by the best seller, “The Weight Loss Cure-They Don’t Want You To Know About”, by Kevin Trudeau. Trudeau, is known as the infomercial king capable of selling snow to an Eskimo.      

A controlled substance, hCG is administered by daily injection. However, in order to prove effective one must adhere to a very specific food plan and low-calorie diet of approximately 500 calories daily. That’s not all. The book lists a long list of do’s and don’ts that make mainstream living next to impossible while following the protocol. 

Then wrote his best seller advocating the program.  

Day one and Day two:    

1. Take an injection of between 125-200 units of hCG first thing in the morning. 2. Drink one half to one gallon of water that is fortified with coral calcium sachets. 3. Eat as much food as you can. But keep it healthy and organic. 4. Continue with the activities (do’s and don’ts) you’ve been doing in the 30-day preliminary Phase 1.    

Day 3 to day 45:    

1. Weigh yourself immediately upon arising after emptying your bladder.  

2. Take an injection of between 125-200 units of hCG first thing in the morning.  

3. Drink one half to one gallon of water that is fortified with coral calcium sachets. 4. Breakfast:

5. Lunch: 100 grams (3.5 ounces) of grilled

- spinach – Chard – Beet greens – Lettuces – Tomatoes – Celery – Fennel – Onions (white, yellow or red) – Red radishes – Cucumbers – Asparagus – Cabbage
